Hawaii – The Big Island

Two years ago, in July  2014, we were blessed with one of the best experiences of our lives. Our oldest son not only got married to a beautiful, wonderful young woman, but the wedding was in Hawaii! We got to spend an entire week there with our children and grandson experiencing some of the beauty of the island before the culmination of the trip at the wedding! I love to share our experience with this beautiful island!

The island of Hawaii, known as the Big Island has two major cities with airports, Hilo on the eastern side of the island and Kona on the western side. We flew from Chicago to Phoenix, then Phoenix to Kona. As soon as we  got off the plane we knew we were on an island! We stayed at the beautiful Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. This is also where the wedding took place. There is so much to see and do in Hawaii that even 7 days on one island is not enough, but we did get a lot of sightseeing in. There was shopping day in Kona with vendors out along the main drive, restaurants with a sunset view over the ocean, coffee plantations high in the hills, waterfalls, the rainforest, the southernmost point of the USA, a Hawaiian Winery, Hawaii Volcanos National Park and where some stayed for the glow of lava in Kilauea. One son took a journey to the observatory at the top of Mauna Loa for the view of the stars. We all had an adventure day out on the ocean to snorkel, dive, paddle board or swim that ended with a traditional luau. Of course the highlight of the trip was watching our son and daughter-in-law exchange vows on beautiful Keauhou Bay followed by dinner and dancing. If you ever get an opportunity to visit this or any other island jump on it and if you can do it with loved ones even better! This is a beautiful world we are privileged to live in, I hope we preserve it for all the generations to follow.

If you are visiting the Kona area I would highly recommend Fair Wind Cruises. We took the Hula Kai Deluxe Kona Coast Snorkel and BBQ Cruise. It was wonderful! A continental breakfast was provided then as we played in the water, snorkeling, diving, paddle boarding, etc a delicious BBQ lunch was prepared and served.
